Captain of Abbey Golf Club has raised £5K for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity.

The Captain of Abbey Golf Club Redditch, has raised over £5,000 for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity in the past year thanks to the support of the club. Abs Rohomon championed the charity during his captaincy after his daughter, Rachel, was born with congenital heart disease at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Rachel, now 13, has a lot to look forward to thanks to the dedication and skill of the staff at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Abs wanted to show his appreciation.

Congenital heart disease is a heart condition or defect that develops in the womb, before a baby is born. There are many types of congenital heart disease, for example, a baby’s heart valves may not be properly formed or there may be holes between the chambers of their heart.

Dr Baylon Kamalarajan, Consultant Paediatrician at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Worcestershire Royal Hospital said: ”Fortunately, nowadays we can treat these conditions by picking up these issues before a child becomes unwell and, at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, we have doctors trained to scan babies’ and children’s hearts if we suspect a problem.”

Throughout the year, Abs and his club raised money through golf days, away days, support from local businesses and donations from golf club members.

Abs said: “I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and friendliness of this amazing club, the number of people who have helped me both with financial support, gifts and sponsorship and for making the process of organising fundraising days such an amazing and rewarding experience.”

Nicky Langford, Community Fundraising Officer for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity said: “We were thrilled to bits when Abs told us he’d chosen our charity for his captaincy year and were fortunate to meet his family and most of his golfing buddies at his formal handover back in April 2022. Support from our community is so important for our appeals and projects, we very much appreciate the support from Abs and his golf club; they raised a phenomenal amount of money, which will change lives.”
