I am requesting the following information on local healthcare and support service provision for multiple myeloma patients as part of a wider project (funded by Myeloma UK). Please provide the following information: 

  • Total population size served by Regional Board: Worcestershire Population 2024 604,900
  • Number of hospitals providing oncology services 3 Sites Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, Redditch. Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre

Total number of consultant haematologists employees; 7 staff

specialist haematology registrars employed; 2 Staff

consultant haematologists specialising in multiple myeloma; They are generic consultants covering all tumor sites, so 7 staff

haematology clinical nurse specialists employed and multiple myeloma clinical nurse specialists. –All generic so 4 Staff 

 During 2023 (1 Jan – 31 Dec), please provide the: 

  • Total number of multiple myeloma (MM) cases diagnosed (Please state which code(s) were used) 62 diagnosed with code C900 recorded on the Somerset Cancer Register (SCR)
  • If known, how many people were diagnosed with smouldering multiple myeloma? not recorded on SCR
  • How many in-person hematology-based consultation/telephone hematology-based consultations/ video hematology-based consultation took place for people diagnosed with MM?  59 of the 62

During 2023 (1 Jan – 31 Dec): 

  • Were multiple myeloma (MM) patients discussed/reviewed at a MM specific MDT or general hematology MDT? MDT at Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust is General
  • How frequently did MDT meetings meet? Weekly
  • What percentage of MM patients diagnosed in 2023 were reviewed/discussed at a MDT?  100%
  • Which professionals/disciplines are represented on MDT meetings for MM?  Consultants/Pathologists/Radiologist/CNS/Oncologists
  • What supportive and palliative care services are available for MM patients? Referral to palliative care team if required.
