Reported incidents of racism/racist abuse (of any type, e.g. verbal, physical) by patients against staff at your trust, broken down by month, from the dates 31 January 2014 – 31 January 2024.

Reported incidents of racism/racist abuse (of any type, e.g. verbal, physical) by staff against staff, broken down by month, from the dates 31 January 2014 – 31 January 2024.

Reporting rates have increased as we continue to develop a reporting culture.

The figures below do not necessarily indicate that the number of actual incidents involving racism have risen steeply in 2023, but may be related to the introduction of a flag to indicate if racism was overtly a factor in the assault.

2014 – 2019 inclusive – there was no distinct reporting category for incidents involving racism. So for this period we have searched for verbal/physical assault incidents that mention racism in the description.

2020 – 2022 inclusive – introduced the categorisation of the relationship between the assaulter / assaulted.

2023 – introduced a flag to indicate if racism was overtly a factor in the assault.
