You are an essential part of your baby’s care, and we want to encourage you to be with your baby as much as you can. The nursing and medical care your baby receives cannot replace your love and presence. Your baby knows you are there, they love being close to you and hearing your familiar voice.
We will support you to be fully involved in your baby’s care and to become a part of the neonatal team. There are no restrictions for parents/carers, day or night. A member of the team can tell you about other family or friends visiting.

Feeding Your Baby
Your breastmilk is like medicine for your baby. Early expressing of Colostrum (the first milk) is encouraged immediately after birth. These small drops will be given to your baby as soon as possible and will protect them from infection and support their growth and immune system.
More information about feeding your baby can be found here:

Your Wellbeing
We understand that having a baby in the neonatal unit can be a difficult time for you and your family. Your wellbeing is very important and staff are here to listen and support you at this time. If you are unsure of anything or require any support, please ask a member of the neonatal team.

On the neonatal unit

  • When you arrive, it might take a minute or two to answer the door buzzer.
  • Preventing infection on the neonatal unit is important, please make sure you wash your hands when you arrive and before contact with your baby.
  • It helps to keep cot spaces as clear as possible, please leave your coat and any other belongings in the spaces provided.
  • Staff will explain the equipment and monitors on the unit, more information can be found on the BLISS website below.

The Neonatal Journey
This information is part of a document called ‘The Neonatal Journey’ which is designed for you to complete together with staff on the unit. It helps us to get to know you as a family and to work through caring for your baby at different stages of your neonatal journey.
