Used in investigation of Cushing’s syndrome and Addisons. Usually paired with plasma cortisol in dynamic function tests.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Samples for basal ACTH should be taken between 0700-1000hrs. The stress caused by venepuncture may elevate its concentration. Sample must be received in lab within 8h collection

Reference range

6 – 51 ng/L

Reference range applies to a sample collected between 7am and 12 midday and must be interpreted in context of proven adrenal hypofunction or hyperfunction.

Hand deliver to the laboratory immediately after collection.

LAB INSTRUCTIONS: Separate on receipt, aliquot plasma, and freeze.

Transport plasma frozen to referring lab.
