TIME BETWEEN SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND PROCESSING: Specimens should be transported and processed as soon as possible. Culture plates may be inoculated at the bedside.

SPECIMEN TRANSPORT AND STORAGE: Pernasal and nasopharyngeal swabs. Sealed plastic bag sealed plastic bags attached to the request form. Nasopharyngeal aspirates Sterile leakproof container in a sealed plastic bag attached to the request form. Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste or sharps container.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Moisten the tip of the pernasal swab in sterile water or saline and gently insert it into one of the nares. Guide the swab backwards and only slightly upwards along the nasal septum until a distinct give of resistance indicates that the posterior pharynx has been reached. Gently remove the swab and place in the transport medium. Transport to the laboratory with minimum delay, if a delay occurs, store the swab at room temperature.
