Indicated in monitoring patients with known pancreatic carcinoma CA 19-9 assay detects the sialylated form of lewis blood group antigen and so is not present in around 10% of individuals who lack this antigen. Not specific for pancreatic cancer, being elevated in extrahepatic biliary obstruction, chronic liver disease and other GI cancers Used to monitor patients with pancreatic and colorectal cancers.
