Test information

To monitor patients on long term TPN or enteral feeds (6 monthly intervals) To investigate disorders of copper metabolism, commonly Wilson’s Disease. The usual biochemical finding is of low plasma copper and caeruloplasmin concentrations. Oestrogens increase copper by increasing caeruloplasmin synthesis so it can be 2 to 3 fold higher in the last trimester of pregnancy and with use of OCP Raised values also seen in inflammatory states and with steroid hormone therapy
