For differentiating suspected irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients with symptoms >6 weeks & no red flag symptoms. Infection should be excluded. Also for monitoring of known IBD (secondary care only)

Pre-analytical

Ideally NSAIDs should be stopped 2 weeks prior to sampling.Samples must be received in standard blue lidded faecal container, ideally 1/3 full (NOT overfilled). Non-standard containers are not acceptable. Please include date of sample on container and form and ensure ICE request form is completed and sent with sample. Samples should be received within 3 days of collection (can be refrigerated prior to transport)
