Request forms should have adequate details to ensure correct processing e.g. foreign travel, immunosuppression, consumption of shell fish and weight loss.

Test information

Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste and/or sharps container. Tests performed in a UKAS Accredited Medical Laboratory No. 8873.

Guidelines

Current guidelines indicate that culture is not required on patients who have developed enteric symptoms 3 days post admission, as gastrointestinal symptoms presenting >3 days after admission are rarely caused by Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and STEC (including O157). Please contact Microbiology if full enteric screening is required.

Pre-analytical

Specimens of faeces should be transported to the laboratory and processed as soon as possible, as a number of important pathogens such as Shigella species may not survive the pH changes that occur in stool specimens which are not promptly delivered to the laboratory, even if stored in a refrigerator. Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste and/or sharps container.

Special requirements

Compliance with postal and transport regulations is essential Refer to separate SOP HG3 pathogens must be stored in CL3 in a secure cupboard. There is a 72 hour time limit to request an add-on test as the stool sample is not viable after this time period.
