Test information

All samples are tested in-house via a nucleic acid amplification assay which detects HSV-1 & HSV-2. Sample swabs can be taken from any site where HSV infection is suspected. Tests performed in a UKAS Accredited Medical Laboratory No. 8873.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

If a delay in transporting the specimen to the laboratory occurs, please refrigerate the sample at 2-8°C until the specimen can be delivered to the lab.

Special requirements

Please telephone the microbiology department to notify us of any medico-legal specimens (for example in cases of alleged sexual assault) prior to sample dispatch. These samples must be accompanied by a laboratory chain of evidence form and be hand delivered to the duty senior biomedical scientist. Please do NOT leave these samples at specimen reception.
