Role in diagnosis of inherited disorders of homocysteine metabolism and investigation of hyperhomocysteinaemia as a possible risk factor for CHD, but it is not recommended for routine screening. Also measured in young stroke patients.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Generally it is recommended that the subject should have fasted (or at least avoided a protein-rich meal). Samples should be transported to the laboratory on ice, if possible, and spun and separated within 30 mins of collection. Plasma is stored frozen.
