Test information

For Microbiological Joint fluid analysis. If the request also requires crystal analysis, please submit a separate sample and request to the Cytology department. Tests performed in a UKAS Accredited Medical Laboratory No. 8873.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste and/or sharps container.Specimens should be transported and processed as soon as possible. If processing is delayed, refridgeration is preferable to storage in ambient temperature.Delays of over 48h are undesirable. The volume of specimen influences the transport time that is acceptable. Large volumes of purulent material maintain the viability of anaerobes for longer.
