Test information

Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste and/or sharps container.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

PCP testing should be reserved for patients who are both immunocompromised and have evidence of lower respiratory tract infection (other common respiratory pathogens should also be considered with appropriate investigations as required). If specimens can not be tested on the day of collection, store them at 2-8˚C in stoppered tubes for up to 6 days.Sputum or Bronchi-Alveolar Lavage (BAL) sample is the specimen of choice. EDTA blood should be sent to aid interpretation of the respiratory specimen, but used alone cannot exclude PCP.

Reference range

Tube type
