Test information

Used to assess adrenal status. For suspected hypoadrenalism, SST used to assess adequate function and reserve. For acutely ill inpatients SST used to assess adrenal reserve.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Baseline sample (prior to synacthen) and sample taken at 30 min post synathen required. Samples MUST be clearly labelled with TIME taken.Sample 60 min post synacthen can also be taken. ACTH analysis at baseline may also be indicated (purple-top EDTA sample required)

Reference range

A cortisol level >450 nmol/L 30 minutes after Synacthen dose indicates an adequate adrenal response. Steroid therapy may affect interpretation. Results should always be interpreted within the clinical context
