Test information

FRESH specimens are essential and all specimens should be sent to the laboratory immediately after collection. Ensure that all specimens are fully labelled with patient’s identification.Out of normal cellular pathology laboratory working hours, please store this specimen in the fridge until they can be delivered to the laboratory.

Cytology samples are kept for 2 weeks post authorisaition – Requests for additional examinations on the same primary sample must be requested prior to this.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

Early morning urine is not desirable for cytology. Please state if taken at or after cystoscopy, or if a catheter is present.

Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste and/or sharps container.

30 to 50ml of freshly voided urine (NOT midstream) in universal container.

Special requirements

Urine samples are particularly susceptible to rapid degeneration. Allow adequate time for specimen preparation in the laboratory on the day of collection.
