Routine monitoring of vitamin D is generally unnecessary but may be appropriate in patients with symptomatic vitamin D deficiency or malabsorption and where poor compliance with medication is suspected (National Osteoporosis Society)Routine analysis of total vitamin D will be in-house by immunoassay. If the patient is on D2 (ergocaliferol) samples will be sent to the referral lab in South Manchester for analysis by mass-spectrometry.

Pre-analytical

Bone profile should be checked at same time.Please indicate if patient is on vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) supplements. If so, samples will be sent to referral lab for analysis.

Adequate status >50 nmol/L; Insufficiency 30-50 nmol/L; Deficiency 15-30nmol/L;Severe deficiency <15nmol/L
