Urology

Urology is the surgical specialty that covers the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureter, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.

Our urology services are based at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, where we have dedicated urology theatres and wards that offer specialist equipment, expertise and nursing care for urology patients.

We provide:

  • Minimal access and major open surgery
  • Reconstructive urology
  • Erectile dysfunction clinics
  • Urodynamics and videourodynamics
  • Prostate assessment clinics
  • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) investigations
  • Transrectal ultrasound scan and prostate biopsy
  • Laser surgery in urology
  • Non-invasive ESWL for urinary stones
  • Minimally invasive stone surgery

Every year our specialist service performs 8,000 surgical procedures and sees more than 5,000 new patients in clinics.

    We have a team of 6 consultant Urologists who work across our Hospital sites providing a comprehensive service to patients living in Worcestershire and beyond:

    We have a team of 5 urology nurse specialists who are trained in both cancerous and non-cancerous urological problems.

    Their services include:

    • Specialist advice on the management of symptoms or effects of treatment for patients, relatives or carers who are affected by a urological cancer or non-cancerous urological conditions
    • Counselling for urology patients, relatives and carers
    • Core members of the urology multidisciplinary team
    • Investigation, results and treatment clinics
    • Support and training to healthcare staff
    • Telephone contact and consultation

     

     

     

     

  • Urology inpatient service

    If you are required to undergo surgery at our Hospital, we have a dedicated surgical ward at the Worcestershire Urology Centre Ward 10 at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

    There are 21 beds and over 32 members of staff on the ward, providing high quality care to patients and visitors.

    We admit emergencies from A&E, patients who are due to have major urological surgery and occasionally transfers from other local hospitals.

    We undertake a variety of procedures including:

    • radical prostatectomy
    • nephrectomy
    • orchidectomy
    • percutaneous nephrolithotomy
    • urethroscopy
    • trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
    • trans-urethral resection of a bladder tumour (TURBT)
