West Midlands Perinatal Network

The Neonatal Network and transfer of your baby – the neonatal units in the West Midlands work together to make sure babies and families receive the care they need as close as possible to home. All units have skilled nurses, doctors and other health care staff providing high quality 24-hour care. To make sure your baby receives the right care in the right place it is sometimes necessary for your baby to be transferred to another neonatal unit.

In the West Midlands there are:

• 5 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) which provide all levels of care
• 5 Local Neonatal Units (LNUs) which provide short term intensive care, high dependency and special care
• 4 Special Care Baby Units (SCBUs) which provide immediate intensive care, short-term high dependency care and special care
• Specialist Surgical units: Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

All babies are transferred by specialist transport teams. There are two teams covering the West Midlands, KIDS/NTS and CenTre (Coventry and Warwickshire neonatal units).
