Financial support to manage your diabetes

We recognise that having to attend at least four diabetes clinic appointments a year, as well as other diabetes related appointments, can be costly, result in time off work and put a significant burden on a family’s resources.  Please ask our team and see the links below for further information on support available.

Can you get help with NHS costs?

If you’re on a low income you could get help with NHS costs.  The NHS Low Income Scheme could help you pay for NHS prescriptions, NHS dental treatment, eyecare, travel to receive NHS treatment and more. Find out more and apply at: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-low-income-scheme

Children and young people under 16 years of age are entitled to free prescriptions as well as 16–18-year-olds in full-time education. If you are on medication to manage your diabetes you are also entitled to a medical exemption certificate which allows you free NHS prescriptions.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

DLA can help with the extra costs of looking after a child who is under 16 years of age and needs much more looking after than a child of the same age who does not have a disability.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

PIP can help with extra living costs if you have both a long-term physical or mental health condition and difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition.

Supporting Children with Diabetes

Supporting Children with Diabetes is a hardship fund to help those families whose children suffer from Type 1 Diabetes and who do not have the means to support them during times of crisis.

The money is used to help families buy diabetes-related items for the home or to provide mobile phones or laptops to assist with the use of NHS-supplied Continuous Glucose Monitors.
